Hello everyone and welcome back to my website!
This past week has been a whirlwind to say the least. Immediately after arriving home from our SWAC Conference, my teammates and I had an amazing opportunity to be apart of a career panel hosted at the LPGA Chevron Championship! I am grateful I was able to sit in and listen to inspirational women in the golf industry and how their stories led them to this amazing game.
My experience here at the LPGA Chevron Championship has been nothing short of a blessing. The people I’ve met, the connections I’ve made, it is so amazing to sit back and see what God can do.
Peter Jacobsen has made a huge impact on PVAMU Golf. Every time we see him, he takes his time to make us feel special and encourage us to succeed in the paths we take. When Mr. Jacobsen and I first met, junior year me did not know what route of the communications field I wanted to embark on. At the time, I figured sports broadcasting was up my alley. He taught me so much and gave me insight into his life as a broadcaster. Ever since then, whenever we meet, he encourages me to follow the broadcasting route but most importantly, encourages me to be the best person I can be.
I am extremely fortunate to call myself a PVAMU student athlete, and represent this amazing university. Our KPVU-TV broadcast team got invited to stream live from the inspiration dome at the Chevron Championship! Each day, new people flooded into the dome and got to experience the talent that embodies PVAMU. I want to thank my Professor, Teresa Dowell-Vest for the opportunity of a lifetime. She is such an inspiration to myself and my peers and truly uplifts her students and our university.
My time at the LPGA Chevron Championship consisted of interviewing many people. It was interesting hearing many peoples stories and learning how golf has impacted their lives. I also ran into many junior golfers that I had the pleasure of mentoring and coaching this year. Interviewing them and learning more about their stories really highlighted how much I enjoy being part of organizations such as The First Tee.
The highlight of my week was being in the media tent and interviewing Nelly Korda. Not only is she an amazing golfer, but an amazing woman who is a role model for girl golfers across the world. It made me smile when despite her being fatigued after a round of golf, took the time to go through a long line of fans and sign her name on memorabilia. A core lesson for myself and everyone is that golf is not all about your scorecard, it is about who you are as a person.
Another highlight that I almost forgot to mention was that I won a free pair of custom Nike Air Force One's on Saturday! Does not compete with my interview with Nelly, but a highlight nonetheless!
The Chevron Championship means so much to so many, and an important takeaway from this week is the importance of growing the game. As a senior in college, I have witnessed how this game can change your life. As someone who has benefited from playing this amazing sport, it is my job to share in this experience and encourage people to try golf. No matter who you are or what you look like, you can always uplift and encourage someone.
As a wise friend once told me, it cost nothing to be kind.
Thank you to Chevron, Accenture, LPGA, KPVU-TV, and many more for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
